Sequal madness

Paramount pictures confirmed that there will be a sequal to Star Trek. There were original plans to have the film debut later this year however the writers, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, pushed their final draft to later in the summer. Actress Zoe Saldana also stated that production would began at the end of the year.

G.I. Joe is also in the works for a sequal. The first movie did surprisingly well and the new movie hopes to keep the same quick pace and love it ignited in fans. Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (writers of Zombieland and Deadpool) are said to begin negotiations soon.

Ghost Rider 2: Spirit of Vegence, is also scheduled to begin filming later this year. However fans will get to see something different with this film. Producer Mike De Luca announced the movie will be filmed for 3-D. However on a sadder note, Eva Mendes will not be reprising her role as Roxanne Simpson and Mark Steven Johnson will not be directing the sequal.

Paranormal Activity will also be seeing a sequal sometime in the future. Actor, Mark Sloat promises that it will remain true to the first movie and promise to be unique.

The Best of 2009 In Sci-fi and Fantasy

Now that we have finally entered into the year 2010, it is only right to look back at the year 2009's best in Sci-fi and Fantasy. Keep in mind these are from my opinions as well as results on other sites. If you agree that's epic, if not comment as to why.

Best Sci-fi Movie:
Star Trek

We all know the classic series and the many movies that have stemmed and then reached into many different generations. It is a risk to take the loved original characters from the begining, rewind a few years, and throw them into an Alternative Universe setting. But if anyone could do that it's J.J. Abrams. He managed to put together a script with a brillant cast and effects to produce what became known to fans as Star Trek (2009 Reboot). The script kept hints from the original series (such as the man in the red suit always dies and Kirk's love for green women) as well as offering a new history of the characters. The effects such as, what J.J. Abrams likes to refer to as, 'flare' (light affects he added with the help of mirrors and flashlights) were a perfect touch as well as new ideas (such as the use of mirrors rather than cables to make it look like the character was falling in the sky when they were really just standing straight) for affects were able to add that extra something to the film. The cast, though unexpected, worked out amazingly well. Zachary Quinto, most known for his re-occuring role as Sylar in Heroes, was able to pull of Spock perfectly. Although not the first choice (they considered Adrian Brody for the role) he was the best. Chris Pine was able to keep the specific traits of Kirk while taking him one step further. And Zoe Saldana managed to bring knew love for Uhura with her portrayal and sudden love interest for Spock.

Best Fantasy Movie:
Avatar

James Cameron wrote a compelling story of the world of Pandora. Yes, for those who have heard me talk about the writing of this script I will still stick to my belief that the story was too cut and dry. Characters were either good or evil and if you didn't side with the people of Pandora you are a heartless sonuvabitch. Although I still believe those things were utter bull, it doesn't take away from the fact that the story was compelling. The characters of Jake and Neytiri are memorable. Sam Worthington, already memorable from the recent Terminator 4 movie, took his acting career a step further with this role. And the amazing Zoe Saldana was my favorite as Neyteri. The movie also pushed the use of CGI further. It definitly deserves the oscar it is nominated for.

Best Horror Movie:
Jennifer's Body

I know this choice will probably come back at me but I have to say it is the choice I make. Drag Me To Hell and Haunting In Conneticut just weren't good. I saw Jennifer's Body a couple of days ago for the first time and it proved to be a lot better than I was honestly expecting. The story was pretty good. Diablo Cody proved she is a writer. True some scenes and phrases could have been taken out or re-written, but it was still nice. To be completely honest I think I am choosing this movie for the directing and certain shots. It was classic horror movie with the idea of Creature + People = GO! Also, I will never forget the shot when Jennifer breaks into Needy's home after being attacked. The lighting cast in a dark way over her face, the blood dripping down her mouth and that frightening smile she gives Needy after asking if she is scared. It was perfect.

Best Animated Film:
Coraline

So I may be biased on this one since Coraline was a movie based on a novel by Neil Gaiman. Not to mention it was directed by Henry Selick (director of The Nightmare Before Christmas). But beside the point, the movie was close to the book and a work of art in itself. Clay stop-motion mixed with normal animation is one of the best combos for a kid movie. Plus, the story is a classic.

Best TV Show:
Supernatural

OK, I will admit that I was a little late when it came to watching this brilliant TV show. But over winter break I did a massive marathan of seasons 1-4 and the first 10 episodes of season 5 and I am now hooked. The story of Sam and Dean is not easy to forget. Not to mention the two co-stars give career-making performances. Season 5 deserves to make this show the best Sci-fi/Fantasy show of the year. The story of two brothers whose mother was murdered and father trained them to be hunters of supernatural beings, including the Yellow-Eyed Demon, Azazel, in season 1, the controversies and fate of the children with demon blood/abilities like Sam in season 2, the release of hell in season three, the race against Lilith in season 4, and now the impending apocalypse in season 5. This show just throws one thing after another. The 5th season may be seeing favorite supporting character's deaths as well as more drama between the brothers but it still offers the usual hunts (including an episode featuring Paris Hilton) as well as trips to the future or past. This show is far from running out of steam.

Best Male Actor (In TV or Film)
David Tennant

The Doctor (X) is probably one of the most loved Doctors from the series of "Doctor Who". He is widely recognized, more than some of the previous doctors, and the adventures he had during his season were some of the best of the series. David Tennant was also a member of the Harry Potter cast for a time and is still strong. But his role as The Doctor is probably his most famous and memorable. It is true David Tennant only appeared in a handful of episodes but other fans still went wild for his character putting him at the top of any poll.

Best Female Actor (In TV or Film)
Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana had appeared in many things prior to Star Trek. But her role as Nyota Uhura is what truly put her on the map and made her a star. She gave a brilliant performance that fleshed out the character. Then she continued with her role as Neyteri in Avatar that showed the woman isn't just a Sci-fi typcast. She can actually act as well. Now she will be starring in other movies (such as the unfortunate remake of the hilarious british film "Death At a Funeral", but I'll overlook that for now). It is no doubt we will be seeing more of her in years to come.

Best Director:
Neil Blomkampp

District 9 was Neil Blomkampp's debut, and clearly not his last. With this movie he was able to look at alien movies in a new angle. He used documentary influenced shots with a smart script, he wrote, to produce what ended up on the screen. The 'documentary' of alien apartheid was a story that was a hit with many regular Sci-fi fans who, no doubt, look forward to any of his future movies.
